Thomas Jefferson
Side: Federalist
State: Virginia, largely dominated by plantations, fairly wealthy, has the largest population out of all of the states, a lot of anti-federalist opposition, ratified only to stay a part of the union
Background: Admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1767, Member of the House of Burgesses (1769-1774), Continental Congress (1775-1776, 1783-1784), Wrote the Declaration of Independence (1776), Member of Virginia (1776-1779), Governor of Virginia (1779-1781), and Minister to France (1785-1789)
Involvement in the Constitutional Convention: He was an ambassador to France from 1785-1789. He sent two letters to his friends Edward Carrington and James Madison about his reaction to Shay’s Rebellion. He expressed his feeling that an occasional rebellion or disturbance is healthy for a government.
State’s Ratification: Thomas Jefferson was in France at the time of Virginia’s Convention, so he did not vote.
Arguments and Allies: He was for making a federation, but thought that it would be better if there was a Bill of Rights in the Constitution. Jefferson was friends with George Washington and James Madison; he was enemies with Patrick Henry.
